A simple partial solution to this would be adding to the page background presets a blank-black and/or a black with blue rules. That would already be a HUGE improvement to the eye strain caused by the display and the battery drain, specially in amoled screens

This could be done by using the side button: select normally as it already is and to select or deselect you use the pen with the button pressed. I believe that this would pair nicely with an option to select the strokes just by passing the selection tool over it instead of having to draw around as this way it becomes not only faster to select but also easier to toggle the selection, improving upon the suggestion. However, in my opinion, this kind of selection should be an option that is disabled by default as it may be a bit complicated to understand for a basic user.
I'd glad to hear a response from the developers
