How can I convert old Outlook PST files without installing Outlook?
I'm cleaning up several years' worth of archived Outlook mailboxes and ran into a common problem. The machine I'm using doesn't even have Microsoft Outlook installed anymore, but I still need access to dozens of PST files. Most of the free utilities I tried either required Outlook or failed to preserve the folder structure.
While researching a PST Converter, I found that some enterprise-grade tools can open and convert PST files independently, which seems much more practical for IT environments. One solution I tested worked across macOS, Windows, and Linux, so our mixed-device team didn't need separate software for each operating system.
Another feature that stood out was bulk processing. Instead of converting one mailbox at a time, it handled multiple PST files together, which would be a huge time saver during PST Migration projects. It also preserved email metadata, attachments, timestamps, and the original folder hierarchy, which is essential when dealing with archived communications.
I also noticed it supports exporting into PDF, MBOX, EML, MSG, DOCX, CSV, JSON, and other formats, making it easier to reuse the data in different applications. The preview option helped verify mailbox contents before starting the conversion, and selective filters by sender, receiver, subject, and date range meant I didn't have to export unnecessary emails.
Has anyone else found a reliable PST to Outlook workflow that doesn't require Outlook itself? I'm especially interested in hearing from admins who've handled large mailbox archives or enterprise migrations. Did your conversion tool maintain data integrity throughout the process, or were there issues with attachments or mailbox properties?
